October is notoriously challenging for educators. Routines need constant reinforcement and the academic demands are increasing while everyone’s emotional reserves are depleting. For teachers, the challenge becomes maintaining those crucial SEL practices when you’re managing students with varying needs, planning lessons, grading work, attending meetings, and trying to maintain your own well-being. Students are tired. Teachers are tired. And yet, this is precisely when social-emotional learning becomes most critical and challenging to be consistent with. The good news? AI can serve as a helpful tool during this time, offering both teachers and students the support that October demands without adding to your already overflowing plate. Having weathered 13 Octobers in the classroom, I’ve put together some ways that AI can support you and your students during this month.

For Teachers
You might already be using AI for lesson planning or creating differentiated materials, but it’s equally powerful for supporting SEL practices this October when your energy and creativity are running low. Start your October mornings by prompting AI to: “Generate five calming morning meeting activities for 4th graders who are showing signs of October fatigue.” Within seconds, you have options. Are you struggling with a classroom management approach for a student? Prompt AI to help you brainstorm relationship-building strategies specific to their interests and challenges. You can also use AI to create personalized scenarios for students navigating conflicts or generate reflection prompts catered to the unique SEL needs of your students. Add a quick AI journaling session to your end-of-day routine where you share your challenges and leverage AI to help you reflect on what went well and brainstorm solutions for the next day. The real power is in the time and brain space saved. Instead of spending 30 minutes scouring the internet for just the right resource, you can co-create it with AI in five minutes, then use those other 25 minutes to actually connect with your students—the work that matters most.

For Students
Outside of your usual 1:1 check-ins or peer check-ins, consider adding brief AI-powered morning check-ins where students spend 2-3 minutes reflecting with AI. You can program your student-facing chatbot to respond with validation and a reflective question, setting a mindful tone for the day while you’re taking attendance or handling morning routines. With most student chatbot platforms, you can review responses to see who might need additional support, helping you prioritize which students to check in with further throughout the day. Additionally, if you are working with younger students, you can enhance your existing calm-down corner by asking AI to generate individualized strategies based on each student’s interests and regulation needs. AI doesn’t replace what you’re already doing, it amplifies and personalizes it.

This October, leverage AI to support what you are already doing so that you can focus on what you do best: connecting with your students, responding to their needs in the moment, and building a classroom community that supports everyone’s social-emotional growth.
