The time before school breaks is always filled with a familiar buzz of excitement, anxiety, and anticipation. It’s a time when, as educators, we recognize that Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is more crucial than ever for everyone in the school community. We might have students who are thrilled about upcoming family gatherings, while others might feel anxious about time away from their school community. These emotional peaks and valleys make it the perfect moment to explore how AI can enhance our SEL practices, both now and when we return.

As educators, we know that students with strong SEL skills can more easily navigate these transitional periods. However, supporting each student’s emotional growth during this time can be challenging because we often have so much more on our plates. When paired with SEL, AI offers new ways to personalize support for every student. I’m excited to share two free resources for SEL instruction, along with creative ideas for incorporating AI into your practice

CloseGap

Imagine returning from break with a tool that helps you quickly reconnect with your students’ emotional states. CloseGap makes this possible through its free, AI-powered daily check-in system. It’s especially valuable during those crucial first weeks back when understanding their emotional landscape is important. The system works by providing students with quick, age-appropriate check-in questions. It provides insights that can help you support your students more effectively. For example, if several students express anxiety about returning to school routines, you can proactively implement calming morning activities or one-on-one check-ins.

Inside SEL’s Resources

The Inside SEL website offers educators a valuable Prompt Library of carefully curated conversation starters and writing prompts for social-emotional learning. Teachers can combine them with AI tools to create more personalized learning experiences. You might opt to use AI to generate differentiated follow-up questions or to help adapt the prompts for specific student needs. Beyond their prompt library, Inside SEL publishes an insightful newsletter that keeps educators informed about the intersection of AI and social-emotional learning. By subscribing, you’ll stay informed about the latest trends, research, and practical applications of AI in SEL.

While CloseGap provides AI-powered insights and Inside SEL offers conversation starters, there are many other ways to incorporate AI into your SEL instruction during this transition period. Consider creating “Welcome Back” reflection journals using AI writing prompts that help students process their holiday experiences and set goals for the new year. You might also use AI to develop custom social scenarios that address common post-break challenges, like reconnecting with friends or managing back-to-school anxiety. AI can also help generate personalized mindfulness activities that ease the transition back to school routines, or assist in creating peer connection activities that rebuild classroom community after the break.

Remember, the key to successfully integrating AI into SEL instruction is viewing these tools as enhancers rather than replacements for human connection. They should create more opportunities for meaningful emotional learning and support, not substitutes for genuine teacher-student relationships. The goal isn’t to replace traditional SEL practices but to enhance them with tools that make emotional support more accessible and personalized for every student in your classroom. By combining technology with your teaching expertise, you can create an even more supportive and emotionally aware learning environment for the new year ahead.
