As UnconstrainED trainers, we have the pleasure of working with incredible educators from all over the globe who are integrating AI into their classrooms. The creativity and passion that educators bring into our sessions are unmatched, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to grow and learn alongside them. Throughout our sessions, we work with educators to explore the possibilities of integrating AI into their workflow and classrooms while also discussing it’s current limitations. We’re going to share a few insights below about the current capabilities and constraints of AI in Education, with the hope that these insights can be helpful for educators who are exploring integrating AI in their classrooms.

What AI Can Do… 

Automate Routine Tasks 

We fully support the idea that every classroom teacher deserves a personal assistant. The amount of record keeping they do daily is akin to that of any high-level executive. School budget constraints aside, AI can finally step in to alleviate the burdensome number of routine tasks that teachers complete on the daily. Teachers can use AI to grade multiple choice tests, track student progress, communicate with parents, and even send out emails with information about classes on days that students have missed. We have even entered an era where teachers can leverage AI to create seating charts based on the learning needs of each student. If you think there’s an education focused routine task that AI can handle, you are probably right!  

Offer Real-Time Feedback  

AI changes the game when it comes to student feedback. While we believe that teacher feedback on final drafts of work is invaluable, AI can support students in the drafting process in a way that teachers in most classroom settings can’t accommodate. Teachers can put together a chatbot on Mizou or Schoolai to support students with selecting topic ideas for a project or providing structural feedback on drafts of their essays. This frees up time for teachers to meet with students and give additional nuanced feedback beyond structure. With a wide variety of tools available that provide students with 1:1 support in the moment, you can find the one that works best for you and your students.  

Personalized Learning Pathways 

AI can support teachers in determining each student’s learning pathway. Teachers can monitor student progress in real-time, receiving AI driven data that they would normally take hours to gather. Adaptive programs driven by AI, like Khan Academy and their AI assistant Khanmigo adjust based on student progress and allow students to work through content at their own pace. In fact, students who participated in adaptive learning programs saw a 62% increase in test scores (Knewton Case Study).  This data can drive how teachers differentiate assignments, resources and assessments. 

What AI Can’t Do… 

Replace Human Teachers 
While AI excels at streamlining tasks and delivering personalized content, it cannot substitute for the vital human connection at the heart of teaching. Education extends far beyond content delivery—it’s about building relationships, inspiring trust, and nurturing motivation. Teachers bring irreplaceable skills to the classroom: reading subtle body language, adjusting lessons on the fly based on student responses, and creating dynamic learning environments. These intuitive abilities to encourage, mentor, and foster an inclusive atmosphere remain uniquely human capabilities that no algorithm can replicate. 

Understand and Respond to Complex Emotions 
Though AI can detect basic engagement patterns, it falls short in understanding the intricate emotional landscape of learning. When students face anxiety, stress, or personal challenges, they need more than pattern recognition—they need human empathy and support. Teachers excel at noticing subtle emotional cues, offering timely comfort, and creating safe spaces for vulnerable discussions. This emotional intelligence and ability to provide nuanced support during difficult moments remains a distinctly human skill that defines effective teaching. 

Create Culturally Relevant and Context-Specific Content 
While AI can generate standardized content, it struggles to capture the rich cultural tapestry of diverse classrooms. Effective teaching requires deep understanding of students’ backgrounds, communities, and lived experiences—nuances that AI often misses. Teachers expertly weave cultural context into their lessons, making learning relevant and meaningful for each student. This ability to craft culturally responsive education that resonates with students’ personal experiences remains a uniquely human strength that AI cannot replicate. 

The future of education lies not in choosing between AI and human teachers, but in thoughtfully blending both to create more effective learning environments. While AI excels at automating routine tasks, providing instant feedback, and personalizing learning paths, it’s clear that technology cannot replicate the irreplaceable human elements that teachers bring to the classroom. The emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, and genuine connection that educators provide remain fundamental to student success. As we move forward, the most successful educational approaches will be those that leverage AI’s capabilities to handle administrative burdens and support personalized learning, while empowering teachers to focus on what they do best: inspiring, mentoring, and nurturing the whole student. This balanced partnership between AI and human educators promises to create more engaging, efficient, and meaningful learning experiences for all students.
